Marc Appel is a seasoned biotech investor and operator. He currently serves as the Managing Partner of Pacific Bridge NY, an bidirectional cross-border investment firm dedicated to advancing high-potential biotech programs. The firm invests in 1) Asian technologies/companies and brings them to the US/Europe for later clinical development and 2) invests into Western-based companies with an aim toward giving them an edge by accessing Asian clinical resources. He founded Orange Grove Bio and held the position of CEO there, in addition to serving as the founding CEO for multiple portfolio companies. Throughout his career, he has successfully negotiated, structured, and led numerous deals with large pharmaceutical companies, and has also served on the boards of various biotechs across different stages, disease areas, and modalities. In his capacity as an experienced investor in the healthcare and biotech sectors, he played a key role in developing a structured healthcare and royalty investing strategy at Marathon Asset Management, contributing to a wide range of significant biotech deals. Prior to that, he invested across the capital structure in public-market healthcare opportunities, which included sectors such as healthcare services, healthcare IT, biotech, insurance, and medical devices. Marc also advises several university innovation programs, including the Frankel Fund at the University of Michigan, the Blavatnik Program at Yale University, the tech transfer office at Cornell University, and the Dartmouth Innovations Accelerator for Cancer.
To assist Stuart and Maxine Frankel in achieving their vision, Dean Marschall Runge, MD, PhD, has assembled a world-renowned group of scientists and technology development professionals to serve as advisors to the Frankel Innovation Initiative program and provide their expertise and guidance to Frankel investigators. In addition to reviewing project proposals, selecting awardees, and mentoring investigators, the Scientific Advisory Committee will leverage their vast experience to harness the creative ingenuity of the Frankel investigators and help direct the translation from cutting-edge innovation to life-saving medical practice.
Work with the Office of Cooperative Research to support PIs on the development of new biotech and medical device technologies into companies. I also work closely to support the activities of the Blavatnik Fund, including financing decisions, mentoring Blavatnik Fellows and Associates, and providing business expertise to emerging projects.
