I did the research work for the thesis in Sweden at the Lund University (I spent there my last academic year), and then in Italy, joining several meetings with the head of the Military Geographical Institute (Istituto Geografico Militare - IGM). More precisely, the research work has been developed in two phases. The first phase of this work, which has been developed at the Lund University, was about the design and the implementation of algorithms for the classification of 2D topological items (streets, buildings, watercourses,…) that were included into the Gotheborg Municipality model. This classification will be very important in the future for building the 3D model of the city of Gotheborg. During this first phase the mostly used tools have been: FME for the visualization and the management of the spatial objects and an Oracle Spatial database (SQLDeveloper has been the tool used for the database querying) for the storage of those objects. During this first phase of the work, it has been also possible to take part to the first GIS Scandinavian Conference, which happened in Stockholm in march 2008.
