About

Born in Bergamo in 1943, graduated in chemistry in Turin in 1968, now I live in Bologna; I have been studying naval techniques, history, archaeology and traditions since high school times, while proceeding together with with my profession as a Chemist. Such naval researches are being supported by the physical construction of models and by projects of full scale replicas as well. Researches range from archaeological finds to recent traditions including their ethnolinguistic aspects; my areas of interest include museums, archaeological sites and boatyards all over Italy, from the Po valley to Sicily, in the Mediterranean from Greece to Spain and North of the Alps up to Britain and Scandinavia. I attended many congresses and I gave lectures in Italy and abroad; furthermore, I held seminars at the Universities of Pisa (Scuola Normale), Viterbo, Sassari; I have been cooperating with the museums of Capodimonte (Bolsena Lake), Cesenatico, Comacchio, Mainz, Marsala, Nemi, Pisa, Passignano and S. Feliciano sul Trasimeno, S. Marinella (Rome), Syracuse. From 2001 to 2012 I taught Ancient Naval Architecture at the courses held in Trapani by the Faculty for the Preservation of Cultural Goods of Bologna University. I published 145 articles on periodicals and proceedings of congresses, in addition to 8 books and booklets; my works have been cited 2500 times so far, as surveyed by the site Academia.edu. Main studied wrecks: Anse des Laurons 2, Cervia, Cheops, Comacchio, Lido Signorino (Marsala), Madrague de Giens, Marsala (both Punic wrecks), Nemi, Pisa, Ravenna (boat), Yassi Ada II. Ongoing developments: concepts and procedures of ancient naval architecture, the great Hellenistic ships, a replica of a Roman bireme (a project supported by the Italian Navy), an atlas of the traditional crafts in Italy, ships and boats in Italian figurative art from the late Middle Ages to the 19th Century.
