Mr Marcel Ivanov MD, PhD, MSc, FRCS is a Consultant Neurosurgeon and Spinal Surgeon whose main NHS practice is based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield. He is Spinal Lead at the Department of Neurosurgery and Audit Lead for Neurosciences. He is Director of AO SPINE Centre Sheffield. In 2017-2019 he served as AO SPINE UK Council Officer (Neurosurgery) and between 2019-2023 he was Chair of the AO SPINE UK & Ireland. In addition to clinical work he is a Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Sheffield University and actively involved in several research projects. He qualified as a medical doctor in 1999 and as a Neurosurgeon in 2007 with his comprehensive neurosurgical training received in Romania and post CCT Fellowship training in the UK. He was awarded Neurosurgery International Fellowship training at the UIHC, Iowa, USA 2004, and received AOSPINE-EANS Spinal Fellowship training in Leeds, UK (2008) and Neurooncology Fellowship training at the Walton Centre, Liverpool, UK 2009. During his training he visited several European neurosurgical units as part of the EU "Leonardo da Vinci" training programme (Freiburg, Greifswald, Munich, Brussels, Helsinki etc). He developed an interest in minimally invasive neurosurgical techniques and image guided surgery of the spine and brain. He is passioned about modern neurosurgical technology, neuronavigation, robotics, intraoperative imaging. He has a special interest in the treatment of spinal cord tumours. Mr Ivanov is passionate about teaching; he lectures and demonstrates on surgical workshops nationally and internationally. He is involved in examination of medical students and neurosurgical trainees at different levels: local (Sheffield University), UK - National selection exams and European level - he is teaching at the EANS Spinal Course and since 2017 he is examiner for Oral EANS exams. Since 2023 he is Chair of the Examination Committee of the EANS. His clinical interests inlcude a wide range of spinal conditions including degenerative, trauma, spinal stabilisation and artificial disc technology, minimally invasive spine surgery and spinal tumours.
