Meredith currently serves as the CEO of the Urban Cycling Institute, an NGO dedicated to research, higher ed, and capacity building for accelerating the shift to sustainable and healthy urban environments. She is an urban mobility researcher and lecturer, based in the Netherlands since 2010. She is also Professor of Cycling at Ghent University’s Department of Geography. Her research focuses on policy innovation, knowledge transfer, and capacity building for accelerated implementation of sustainable transport goals and has been published in international peer-review journals. In addition to research, she directs the summer program Planning the Cycling City and co-developed the Coursera on-line course Unraveling the Cycling City. Meredith also regularly provides keynotes at international conferences that explore sustainable transport, innovation, public health, urban design, and placemaking. She has been featured in a range of media outlets, including the The Guardian, Streetsblog, Apolitical, Outside Magazine, Town & Country, and National Public Radio (USA). She is also a member of scientific board for the Cycling Research Board and TU Graz Active Mobility Center. She is originally from California and holds Masters degrees in urban planning and public health from UC Berkeley. She received her PhD in urban planning from the University of Amsterdam, supervised by her colleague and long-term collaborator, Prof. Dr. Marco te Brömmelstroet.
As a PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam, Meredith's research focuses on policy innovation, knowledge transfer, and capacity building for accelerated implementation of sustainable transport goals. Her research has been published in several academic journals and she has given expert comment for numerous media articles. She has acquired nearly €1mil in grants and manages the academic output for European Commission projects (CYCLEWALK and HANDSHAKE), including hosting learning events, consortium coordination, evaluation, and supervising junior staff. She also co-directs the summer program Planning the Cycling City, and co-developed and -produced the massive online open course Unraveling the Cycling City.
