About

I am an associate professor working at the intersection of artificial intelligence, computer vision, and ecological informatics. I focus on developing machine learning methods to improve wildlife monitoring, particularly through automating the identification of individual animals based on visual data. I developed WildlifeDatasets, an open-source toolkit that supports the research community in animal re-identification by providing standardised datasets and tools and MegaDescriptor, a foundational model used for animal re-identification. I am the organiser of AnimalCLEF2025, the Kaggle competition on animal re-identification, which attracted more than 200 participants. Originally a mathematician, now a computer scientist, I love cooperating with people of different backgrounds. I have lots of cooperation with biologists and engineers. The latter involves solving various optimization problems, be it the control of electric motors, the design of pumps or data analysis in transmission grids.
