Luca Marchetti

Associate Professor at University of Trento

Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

About

Luca Marchetti graduated in Computer Science and earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Verona in 2012. He served as Head of Computational Biology at Fondazione The Microsoft Research - University of Trento Centre for Computational and Systems Biology (COSBI), and actually, he is an Associate Professor at the CIBIO Department of the University of Trento and PI of the Laboratory of Computational Modeling. He is also a Ph.D. Committee Member of the Doctoral Program in Biomolecular Sciences, Department CIBIO, University of Trento and Associate Editor of the journals Heliyon, section Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences, section Molecular Diagnostics and Therapeutics, and Frontiers in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, section Optimization. His research interests are mainly focused on computational systems biology and, more specifically, on algorithmic biological modeling (using deterministic, stochastic or hybrid simulation approaches) and on the development of algorithms for biomarker identification. Among his latest findings, he published several papers in the field of mathematical modeling of biological dynamics (ODE models, stochastic reaction networks, hierarchical modeling, QSP modeling, Hybrid AI-ODE models) by considering both common diseases, such as type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and rare diseases (e.g., lysosomal storage disorders). Moreover, he introduced LGSS (Log-gain Stoichiometric Stepwise Regression), a regression algorithm to derive discrete mathematical models of biological dynamics, HRSSA (Hybrid Rejection-Based Stochastic Simulation Algorithm), a hybrid stochastic/deterministic simulation algorithm for biochemical reaction systems, and BI-SCUDO (Biomarker Identification - Sample Classification SCUDO), a normalization-free rank-based tool for biomarker identification and classification of expression profiles. He actually supervises several research projects in collaboration with universities and pharma companies in the context of Hierarchical and QSP modeling, and he is co-author of one book and of more than 50 scientific papers in international journals, books, and conference proceedings. Some of his publications won international prizes for their level of contribution. He is/has been an advisor of several stage/bachelor/master thesis and PhD students.
