About

Luc Buée is Directeur de Recherche at CNRS and Director of the Lille Neuroscience & Cognition Inserm Research Centre at the University of Lille, France. His laboratory, located on the campus of the Lille University Hospital, is part of the Lille Centre of Excellence in Neurodegenerative Disorders (LiCEND) and the Institute for Brain, Society & Technologies. With over thirty years of experience in Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, Luc Buée has authored more than 350 articles indexed in PubMed. His scientific journey began during his doctoral training at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, where he explored the role of proteoglycans in Alzheimer’s disease. Throughout his career, he has made pioneering contributions, including early neuropathological observations on microvasculature abnormalities in neurodegenerative disorders and the biochemical characterization of tau aggregates in tauopathies, notably the concept of "barcode tauopathies." His work led to the development of experimental models to study post-translational modifications in tau aggregation and secretion, which are now widely used to evaluate therapeutic strategies such as immunotherapy, small molecules, and non-drug therapies. In recent years, always in the field of tau research, Luc Buée has focused on alternate translation initiation sites, extracellular vesicles, and VHH, while also uncovering numerous non-microtubular functions of tau. His current research examines the pathophysiological consequences of neurofibrillary degeneration, its links with amyloid pathology and inflammation, and their collective role in Alzheimer’s disease. Luc Buée is actively involved in international research consortia and serves on several scientific advisory boards and committees, including the Belgian FNRS - Neuroscience board, French National Committee of Universities (CNU69), Janssen Horizon, the Rainwater Charitable Foundation, AD/PD™, and AAIC. He is also the organizer of the Eurotau meetings, a key event for tau research and part of the Tau Global Conference. His contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards, such as the "Prix Claude Pompidou" for Alzheimer’s disease research (2013), the "Grand Prix Spécial des Sciences" from the Society of Sciences, Agriculture, and Arts of Lille (2014), and the "Prix Bernadette et Pierre DUBAN" (2020) from the Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale. He is also a foreign member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium.
