About

Filipe Lourenço is a Portuguese-French Architect graduated from his Master degree with Honours from the ENSA Paris-Malaquais (National Superior School of Architecture Paris-Malaquais). His thesis La Ville Utopique, developed under the supervision of the Professor and Doctor in Philosophy Jean Attali, was selected for the exhibition L´architecture et L´imaginaire which was exposed in the Gallerie des Beaux Arts de Paris and in La Gallerie du Crous de Paris. Very early in his studies Filipe realized his particular interest in the city and the territory thus during his studies he partook in researching the understanding of the metropolis of Paris at night for the book Paris la Nuit, by the professor Marc Armengaud published by the Pavillion D’ Arsenal. Nevertheless, during his studies at the Paris-Malaquais Filipe also developed research with Jean Attali, for his Project of a World Atlas of Cities, a collaborative and collective platform contributing to the understanding of major urban changes and the interpretation of contemporary architecture. During his architecture studies Filipe acquired a diverse work experience in various scales, first he worked part-time with the French Interior Architect Pierre Hervé Walbaum where he developed a particular interest for restauration and partook in projects of historic Monuments, Palaces and Castles in France. In 2007 Filipe shifted into large scale urban developments and towers projects developed in Sydness Architects in New York, having worked for consecutive years in the office. Filipe’s prior work experience allowed him to work as an Architect in the Pritzker prized Architect Jean Nouvel where he worked on the Glass Tower project in New York. Following his year in Jean Nouvel, Filipe obtained the title ADE,HMONP Architecte and enrolled the Master in Philosophy of Architecture where he obtained an MPhiL degree with AA Honours with his thesis Paris The Metropolis of Tomorrow, in the Projective Cities Programme created by Christopher Lee (Serie Architects), and Sam Jacoby at the Architectural Association in London. After his MphiL Filipe decided to open his own Practice in Lisbon on October of 2016 alongside the Architect Gabriella Gama founding Apparatus Architects. The Studio, only in its 3rd year, has recently been awarded the prestigious A+Awards Architizer 2020. The winning project will also be featured in the Architizer World’s Best Architecture book published by Phaidon. The practice has also been recently placed 2nd in a Nacional Competition for a Social Housing development in Portugal.
