• Introduction to practice before the Court in a broad range of criminal and civil law areas • Introduction to criminal and civil trials, pre-trial case management, Charter applications, pre-trial motions, voir dires, preliminary hearings, sentencing circles, and therapeutic courts • Opportunity to gain valuable insights into what makes for effective courtroom advocacy (oral and written) • Opportunity to develop excellent analytical, research, and legal writing skills with the guidance of judicial mentorship, enhanced by the insights gained from the clerkship experience • Opportunity to work closely with all judges; to work closely with a sitting judge on one case from beginning to end; and to experience being on circuit with the Court • Practical experience gained from a two one-month secondments at private firms and/or Legal Aid SK.
• Areas of law practiced included: criminal law, small claims, residential tenancy, prison law, administrative law, and wills and estate. • Take responsibility for all aspects of the client files assigned, including: communicating with clients, preparing correspondence and legal documents, and representing clients at hearings or appeals, under the supervision of supervising lawyers; • Take leadership role with respect to the training, orientation, and management of volunteers and clinical law students. • Lead projects aimed at the development of CLASSIC’s areas of service.
• Provide institutional and legal support to the Commission on Human Rights & Public Administration/ Integrity (SCHRPA) • Strengthen institutional capacity in terms of developing systems, processes and procedures to enhance the operations of Swaziland’s Human Rights Commission • Design & manage five main projects: a) Five-year Strategic Plan; b) Institutional Progress Report for 2009 – 2013; c) Human Rights Investigation and Complaints procedures; d) Human Rights Manual; e) Conduct Human rights awareness, Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) baseline survey on the Security forces.
• Assist refugee women as they pursue their claims in Canada by providing affordable temporary accommodation, financial, and psychological supports. • Provide referrals to education, counselling, and support services including language class, employment training, job search programs and cultural integration programs. • Act as main liaison with governmental bodies and community organizations. • Manage volunteers and organization's budget/finance/annual planning.
