As someone who's spent over a decade in the field of TESOL, I've had the opportunity to learn and grow, first with nine years of overseas experience teaching EFL while based in South Korea, and now with over two years in Australia teaching tertiary students in intensive English preparatory courses. I find my work with students rewarding and enjoy helping them reach their goals and providing support as they navigate the difficulties of living and learning in a new country. My skills extend beyond the day-to-day teaching of being in front of a classroom. In my time at DUELI, I've been at work behind the scenes both in developing resources and curricula. In particular, in August 2023, I had the opportunity to work on the curriculum and resouces for a closed 4-week course of EAL teachers from Japan, which I also taught. We covered topics affecting the TESOL field today, such as the questions of AI, effective L1 use, and cultural identity and language, as well as more general topics such as making rubrics and keeping classes engaging. The post-course reviews were all very positive, with teachers stating they felt they had learned much in many different areas of TESOL and were much better prepared to go back to their classrooms the following year. I've also employed my skills of resource and curriculum design at Maewon Elementary, where I noticed a gap between our year-long learning outcomes and our theme-based curricululum, particularly in the area of writing. I led the team to create new writing projects, complete with curricula, lesson plans, resources, and cross-subject revision, such as necessary changes to vocabulary, grammar, and reading curricula. A lifelong learner, I believe that continuing your education is essential to being the best instructor you can be. In 2016, I gained a TESOL certificate from Coventry International, and in 2023, I completed my Master's in TESOL from Deakin University.
As an EAL instructor at DUELI, I've taught both EAP and GE courses to international students and developed resources for my courses. During my time at DUELI, I've led non-mandatory pronunciation, advanced conversation, and grammar workshops, which were well attended. I've also noticed students who were struggling, alerted the necessary members of management, created resources and academic plans, and tutored both individually and in small groups. I participated and, at times, led professional development swapshops.
At Maewon Elementary School, I worked with my third-grade team to develop engaging content that worked both online and offline. I taught our third grade ESL curriculum and advanced my online teaching skills.
At PSA Apgujeong (a branch of YBM), I taught the seven-year-old classes in their second and third years of learning English. I also taught extracurriculars like cooking and drama in the afterschool program, as well as furthering our elementary school students' exploration of English.
At MapleBear Bundang, I taught a seven-year-old class thier first year of English. I also taught elementary school students (ages 8-11) of various levels of English proficiency in grammar, essay writing, reading comprehension, critical analysis, and creative writing. This job at MapleBear included a fair bit of curriculum design as well.
At LOTIS, I was the primary teacher for a first-year-level, six-year-old class. As a part of the afternoon program, I also worked with elementary students in their fourth and fifth years of learning English.
