HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist (from October 2012). The role began with a 6 month rotation throughout the various sections of the pathology laboratories; Haematology, Biochemistry and Histopathology, concluding with a permanent position in Microbiology. The role involved, preparing and analysing many different biological samples for the presence of significant pathogens, in accordance with the methods detailed in the laboratory SOP. This involved the analysis of urine, faeces, blood, sputum, tissue, fluids, in vivo devices, nail, skin etc. My main responsibility was to ensure the specimens on my assigned bench were processed correctly, sufficiently, safely and in a timely manner – this includes specimen preparation, culture reading/ microscopy and analyser maintenance and operation (where applicable). The laboratory provides extensive molecular testing using The BD Max, Cephid SmartCycler and GeneXpert to test for Clostridium difficle, Salmonella, Shigella and Campylobacter from stool samples; HSV, enterovirus and VZV from CSF samples and MRSA, Influenza virus and HSV from swabs/liquid media. During my time in the Microbiology department, I took on additional responsibilities such as, preparing and delivering lectures for students enrolled in a Foundation Science Degree at Portsmouth University. I was also involved in the smooth transition from culture to PCR methods in the enteric section of the Laboratory. This involved determining the most efficient workflow, training colleagues and drafting a temporary SOP document.
This was a temporary position prior to moving to Basingstoke. My daily tasks included: Answering all incoming calls Managing and Updating daily site reports Sending all new codes/standards to site personnel Ordering of stationary Data Entry
