In this role I assisted the Project Manager implement broader organisational strategy and was responsible for supporting two large portfolios. The portfolios included both routine and complex facility and asset management across education, DIT infrastructure, justice and emergency services. Scope of work included construction works, projects, programmed maintenance and breakdowns. The role focused on contractor management and assurance with over 1000 contractors. I conducted regular site inspections, audits, and critical control checks as assurance activities while leading serious incident investigations using the ICAM accident causation model when needed. Although this was only a short timeframe, I significantly improved safety performance in my area of responsibility by increasing my peer's confidence and competency in SHEQ deliverables and related activities.
As a safety leader reporting to the General Manager and advising the Managing Director, I drove the integration of safety into everyday operations and lead a high‑performing HSEQ function. Successfully built capability while strengthening systems, and embedding a proactive, risk‑intelligent safety culture across the organisation. I delivered measurable improvements in frontline safety performance, including cultural uplift, reductions in incidents and plant damage, and increased engagement in hazard and near‑miss reporting. My approach blended transparent leadership, practical risk‑management tools, and targeted education initiatives such as the Energy Wheel, frontline risk‑management training, and a Safety and Excellence recognition program. Key areas of expertise included: - Leadership of HSEQ strategy, systems and frontline engagement - Risk management, assurance and critical control verification - ISO 45001, 14001 and 9001 recertification, external audit coordination and IMS development - Internal audit program design and delivery - Incident management and ICAM investigations - Managing regulatory interactions with SafeWork SA, including Prohibition, Improvement and Section 155 Notices - Development of WHS, quality and environmental management plans - Training design and facilitation for senior leaders, supervisors and frontline teams - Verification of Competency (VOC) uplift and workforce capability development - Management of Change processes - Primary Return‑to‑Work Coordination - Support for major civil and infrastructure projects, including underground services upgrades, new suburb developments and DIT works
This was a great opportunity working with some exceptional people. Unfortunately I made the decision to move on. There was mutual disappointment with this decision.
While I enjoyed working as a consultant advising organisations at Executive level, Senior and Middle Management, Frontline leadership and frontline workers the up and down nature of consulting forced me to look for full time employment.
I started at Carrapateena in 2018 and while I changed companies a number of time, this was by choice in pursuit of work in the safety and training field. After nearly 5 years on the same site I decided to come home for work. Always will be grateful for what Carrapateena gave me.
