Tennis has helped shape my character in that it has instilled in me positive qualities such as discipline, determination, adaptability and resilience that carry over into whatever endeavors I undertake. These characteristics were evident when I was doing my clinical rotations as a medical student in the hospital and dealing with tough cases and difficult patients. A particular incident in my life illustrates how I can adapt to challenging situations that involve interacting with difficult people. I was taking Organic Chemistry lab at Bryn Mawr College’s post-baccalaureate pre-medical program at the time. One day Dr. Stormes, the head of the Organic Chemistry lab department, called me into her office and said, “Kristine, is it possible to pair you with an lab partner from the undergraduate class for Organic Chemistry lab? She has had some behavioral problems with other students in Organic Chemistry lab and I think you would be a good lab partner for her. She doesn’t pair well with aggressive people. She also needs someone who can communicate well.” I agreed to work with her as a partner. She must have been easily provoked because Dr. Stormes then told me that the girl had stabbed her lab partner with a pencil. As I think back, she was putting me in a dangerous situation and now I probably would have not agreed. However, this was years ago and I had very little fear of any situation. As it turns out, the year went very well. My lab partner would help me with some questions I had regarding the lab. I never became argumentative with her and would always speak with her in a calm, soothing tone. In turn, she never got angry or aggressive with me. It was a mutually beneficial relationship and it brought out the best in both of us. The best part of the story was that the head of the Organic Chemistry department wrote for me an exceptional recommendation for medical school!
