I am a Professor of Accounting and Finance with a research focus on corporate governance matters. I have a long lasting interest in executive compensation arrangements and in particular the role of pay incentives in managerial decision making. I am also concerned with the interaction between shareholders and various stakeholders, such as employees, and its impact on financial decisions by corporations. An overarching objective of my research is the identification of inefficiencies in labour and capital markets that lead to financial and ultimately societal crises. Importantly, I try to highlight ways of rectifying them. I am an avid consumer of news. On top of being a precious hobby, I also consider it an indispensable tool since my research is applied and tackles real life problems. News articles, case studies and blog entries also inform my teaching, where I like to challenge my students identify theoretical inconsistencies in the arguments put forward in the mainstream media. I find it particularly gratifying and hopeful that they are mostly successful! In general, I am a big believer in using findings produced by robust empirical analyses to influence regulations, policies and practices. Academia has a crucial role to play in this area in these strange times.
