Koenraad Van Landeghem

Environmental Economist @ Australian Bureau of Statistics

Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia

About

I lead the Terrestial Ecosystem and Land Account teams at the Australian Bureau of Statistics to support Australia's contribution to the international environmental economic accounts community. I also progress work on monetising ecosystem accounts drawing on my expertise in interpreting the SEEA Ecosystem Accounting guidelines on valuing ecosystems. I co-chair the National Ecosystem Accounting Economics Technical Working Group that facilitates shared learnings and solves challenges on monetary valuation of ecosystem services. An inquisitive analytical interest in applied environmental economics and strategic policy setting has sustained a career that includes contributions to the Kyoto Protocol negotiations, the design of a carbon auction scheme and build experimental resource allocation and cost recovery models for Parks Australia that resulted in changes to entry fees.

As project manager I worked in the Critical Infrastructure Program for Modelling and Analysis where I set up a dedicated climate vulnerability project with Sydney Water. CIPMA helped Sydney Water better understand its exposure and vulnerability of climate extremes by modelling the impact of extreme climate events such as fire, flooding and wind on its infrastructure as well as that of its suppliers. This analysis contributed to its business continuity planning.
