The Island School Semester is a place based and experiential study abroad program for high school students centering sustainability, intentional community, and sense of place. Taught Marine Ecology course exploring ecology of Cape Eleuthera ecosystems. Developed curriculum, taught classes, and provided feedback for students. Co-Lead for food security research project done in partnership with the Cape Eleuthera Institute. Focused on improving sustainability and efficiency of the on campus aquaponics system as well as assessing Bahamian attitudes towards aquaculture. Lead outdoor recreation expeditions including a 5 day Down Island Trip including curriculum focused on the culture and history of Eleuthera, as well as developing students camping skills. Advisor for 4 students, communicated with parents and provided emotional, social, and academic support.
Created fun and engaging experiences for guests aboard river cruises. Worked as a bartender and server, and entertained guests with onboard activities and programming centered on Portland architecture and maritime history. Assisted with passenger check-in and reservation management, ensured passenger safety through adherence with coast guard procedures, and assisted the Captain with docking, mooring, and general vessel operations. Performed vessel maintenance tasks, complete regular safety and operational checklists, and received training in boat safety and emergency response protocols.
Supported historically underrepresented students in the transition to college through fostering a sense of belonging and providing support. Planned weekly meetings with mentees to help navigate college life, assisted with academic and personal situations throughout the year by providing resources and serving as an advocate.
Responsible for facilitating weekly trainings, connecting with other groups on campus and the wider Reed community, and generally overseeing board functions. Trainings were developed in collaboration with legal professionals, advisors, and other campus organizations and focused on the adjudicative process, implicit bias, accessibility and accommodations, becoming trauma informed, and other topics as needed. Facilitated community conversations regarding the adjudicative process and the honor principle, connecting with other accountability groups, student government, administration, and the wider Reed community. Completed outreach projects including presentations at Freshman Orientation, Paideia and development of informational zines showcased at the Reed College Zine Fest
Planed and facilitated weekly outdoor trips for the outdoor program at Reed College. Managed a functional budget of over $40,000 each academic year, selected student participants and leaders, and communicated trip details. Managed social media presence promoting Gray Fund Outdoors and upcoming trips, including designing posters and graphics. Ran 12 trips during Spring 2024 with over 110 participants.
Teaching snowboarding fundamentals and coaching a variety of ages and skill levels. Experience with adult and junior group snowboard lessons (Learn to Ride, Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced) as well as with 3-6 yr olds in the Ride and Play Program.
