Khaled is a specialist in construction materials and pavement. He obtained his PhD in Civil Engineering from Leeds University (UK) in 1993, and worked in academia till 2002. He joined the UK Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) in 2002 to lead their Materials and Structures Group, and currently is managing TRL office in Qatar. Khaled’s technical background is in construction, maintenance and management of concrete structures and asphalt roads. He has a broad range of experience in the performance of pavement and concrete structures, testing and compliance, QA/QC, providing advice to government and industry with respect to standards and specifications, developing new designs and materials, use of recycled and secondary materials, performance and durability of construction materials. At Leeds University, Khaled developed extensive research and consultancy background on investigating and testing construction materials. He supervised a large number of investigations into the durability specifications of concrete structures, deterioration mechanisms of concrete and reinforcement corrosion. He also led the consultancy group in developing and implementing durability specification on major projects in the UK.
IRD provides independent research, consultancy and technology development services in the Infrastructure sector in Qatar and the Middle-East. Established in the Qatar Science & Technology Park to develop and implement a range of research and technology transfer activities in green and sustainable construction and renewable energy. IRD specialized in: 1. Quality of construction materials (aggregate, asphalt and concrete). 2. Testing, standards and specifications of construction materials. 3. Managing TRL office in Qatar and TRL Infrastructure work in the Middle-East. Leading TRL research and consultancy on pavements and the use of alternative aggregates in construction. Establishing relation with key stakeholders in the construction industry and using research evidence to provide solutions to practical construction problems. Winner of the Qatar’s Most Innovative Project of the Year 2013 – Qatar Contractors Forum 2013, and Green Mind Award for the Best Green Innovation Project in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in April 2014.
Leading the TRL Materials & Structures and Concrete Pavement team. Managing people and developing business opportunities in concrete pavements and materials. Khaled led the development of new designs and materials for the continuously reinforced concrete pavement for the UK Highways Agency, which have been adopted in the UK Specification for Highway Works (SHW) and the Design Manual of Roads and Bridges (DMRB). Gaining international experience by working in various international projects in Europe, Far East and the Middle East.
