About

I have over 20 years experience in sedimentary and sub-surface geology, diagenesis, geochemistry and reservoir characterisation, with particular reference to mudstones, sandstones, shale reservoirs and seals, and currently active in CO2 and energy storage and in nuclear geodisposal geoscience. My, and my research group's, expertise includes multi-scale field and laboratory (geochemistry and mineralogy) analysis, and I have developed extensive research in X-ray- and synchrotron-based tomography of porous rocks.

Experience

  • Professor at The University of Manchester
    2011 - Present · 15 yrs 6 mos

Mudstone/shale geology: sedimentology, petrography, geochemistry, diagenesis. Shale gas reservoir and source rock characterisation.

  • Professor at Manchester Metropolitan University
    Sep 1996 - Nov 2011 · 15 yrs 3 mos

Headed up a research group applying traditional and novel analysis techniques to further understanding of ancient and modern sedimentary systems.

  • Postdoctoral Researcher in Shale and sandstone diagenesis at University of Manchester
    1991 - 1996 · 5 yrs

This post involved research on the sedimentology and diagenesis of mudstones and sandstone, from the perspective of understanding the controls on petroleum reservoirs and source rocks.

  • Postdoctoral Researcher - Sandstone permeability at University of Reading
    Sep 1990 - Aug 1991 · 1 yr

Integrating sedimentology and permeability structure within reservoir sandstones.
