Moreland City Council serves a community of 130,000 people in the northern suburbs of Melbourne. During my time there, the public relations unit had four communications staff and 30 citizens services staff. Key responsibilities managing internal and external communications managing customer service developing public relations and communications strategies developing and implementing consultation strategies crisis and issues management strategic campaign planning and implementation advising on appointment of consultants writing copy for publications and press releases editing and sub-editing publications managing staff and consultants coordinating designers and illustrators maintaining and developing networks of contacts within the media advising on dealing with the media Key achievements Developed a community consultation program that has been used throughout the world and it is now included in standard textbooks on consultation. Conducted extensive community consultation campaigns on issues such as the introduction of City Link, which has been recognised by PRIA awards. Developed successful issues campaigns on tariff reductions, planning legislation, the rollout of overhead cables, ABC child care centres, and industrial relations. Introduced Language Link to Moreland City Council, a multilingual communications program that has a large and diverse ethnic community. Many local and state government departments have adopted it.
