Orion Expedition Cruises is an Australian-based luxury expedition cruise line that operates the German-built 338 ft., 4000 gross tonne MV Orion in Australasian and Antarctic waters on a year-round basis. As of March 2014, Orion Expedition Cruises was bought by Lindblad Expeditions. Captain, Orion and Orion II As Captain of the flagship mv Orion, and later of Orion II helped build Orion Expeditions into the premier luxury small-ship operator in Australia. Both ships had capacity for about 100 guests, with a crew of 70. • Managed the inaugural Lindblad voyages from New Zealand, through Vanuatu, the Solomons, Papua New Guinea and Micronesia. • Provided feedback to itinerary planners on prior and planned itineraries. • Safely navigated Orion on multiple Antarctic voyages to high latitudes of Adelie Land and the Ross Sea. • Chosen to prepare Orion for transition to new ship owners. Assisted with the final dry-dock in September 2013 and the wet-dock reconfiguration and renaming in March 2013 at the conclusion of Orion Expedition’s last voyage. • Navigated Orion in its itineraries in Australia, Melanesia and New Zealand. • Managed the transition of the Orion II in the shipyard, when it was reconfigured for OEC service, and made the inaugural voyage from Canada, through Alaska and Siberia to Japan. Designed the inaugural itinerary. • Navigated Orion II through all its itineraries in Asia, visiting remote areas of Borneo, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines. • Managed technical inventories and surveys onboard when the ship was purchased by OEC. • Managed the transition from technical management under the original Owners to OEC’s nominated technical managers, and instituted SMS and reporting systems for the new managers. • Prepared Orion II in accordance with BMP4 for a transit of the Indian Ocean and Red Sea. • Participated in marketing trips in Europe, Canada and USA prior to the deployment of Orion II.
Management and operation of a 440 ft. stay-sail schooner, carrying 148 passengers and 90 crew. • Safe navigation of the ship on its itineraries on the west coast of Costa Rica, Greece, Turkey, and the Dalmation Coast up to Venice • Handled the ship under sail. As built, a computer system trimmed the sails, but this was no longer operative which required manual trimming.
