About

Hi all, I’m Dr. Katie Dentzman, a rural sociologist at Iowa State University. I study the human element of sustainable agricultural systems, primarily in the U.S. I’m especially interested in the diversity (both human and non-human, a.k.a. crops, animals, management practices, wildlife, etc.) that exists on farms and how diversifying our agrifood system can lead to increased sustainability and resilience. I do a lot of work with pesticide use and pesticide resistance, particularly related to the use of glyphosate and alternative Integrated Pest Management strategies. Other research topics, at the moment, include the regulation of neonicotinoids in potatoes, farmer and public acceptance of plastic use in agriculture, women farmers’ experiences as seen through the USDA Census of Agriculture, farmer adoption of an NRCS conservation drainage management program, and encouraging transdisciplinary collaboration. I’m also engaged in several professional organizations; I am the President-Elect for the Agriculture, Food, and Human Values Society and also serve as chair for the Multi-State Hatch Project WERA 1010: Improving Data Quality from Sample Surveys to Foster Agricultural, Community and Development in Rural America. After several years serving as an Associate Editor for the journal Renewable Agriculture and Food Systems, I was appointed Editor-in-Chief starting in January 2024. If you have any questions about my work, the organizations/journals I’m involved with, or anything else, feel free to reach out.
