Internationally experienced manufacturing engineer with solid track record of success in process and product development, supplier interfacing, failure analysis, and solving extremely complex manufacturing problems.
(Formerly SUN Microsystems, formerly StorageTek) Developed manufacturing processes and designs for 14 new products taking them from prototype phase to launched product. Initiated drawings, engineering change orders, and specified materials. Designed or reviewed tooling drawings. Extensive interface with international and domestic suppliers. Drove continuous process improvements on assembly and machining operations. Used Six Sigma quality system in an ISO 9001 & 14001 work environment. Identified China air pollution as the cause of complex, line-stopping manufacturing problem and implemented a solution that increased test yields from 33% to 94%. Determined manufacturing resistance change problem was related to a particular piece of equipment 37 operations earlier in the process and increased yields from 50% to 100%. Invented special flex circuit which allowed for ESD safe connections for next generation product and took test yields from 90% to 98% on existing products. Managed all phases of project including design, sourcing material, developing new manufacturing process at overseas factory, getting buy in from end user, and validation testing. Identified the cause of electrical shorts in a 5 nanometer thick insulating layer and determined tooling changes needed at multiple processes. Improvements allowed shipments to resume and increased yields at 3 different tests by 5%, 13%, and 44%. Expert in electrostatic discharge (ESD) mitigation
(Formerly Alliant Techsystems, Formerly Honeywell Test Instruments Division) Developed prototypes and processes, and introduced new products into production. Redesigned tape recorder heads, motors, and assemblies to improve performance, producibility, reliability, cost, and yields. Provided day to day technical support to production personnel and had excellent rapport with operators. Using AutoCAD, designed tooling and fixtures for grinding, lapping, slicing and assembly; frequently interfaced with machine shop. Selected, specified, and justified capital equipment purchases with 100% success rate. Designed and developed long wear helical scan tape recorder head and complex manufacturing processes which increased head life 50 times. Developed improved head manufacturing processes which increased yields from 60% to 98%. Laid out new floor/utility plans for major in-plant remodels and coordinated equipment moves to minimize downtime which contributed $255,000 per year rent savings.
Provided floor support for radar antenna machining processes. Developed processes and tooling for 4 silicon and sapphire chip packaging programs for space. Specified materials and negotiated technical details with suppliers. Frequently worked in clean room.
Routed new parts through machining operations. Justified capital budget machinery. Wrote quality control procedures for U.S. Navy engine parts.
