About

I have a habit of solving problems people thought were unsolvable. In 1996 there was no way to take a card payment on the internet. I built Europe's first online payment processor from scratch - no playbook, no precedent. What became the PCI DSS standard? I helped shape it. What became Paysafe? NetBanx was an essential component. Goldman Sachs thought near-real-time margining wasn't possible. I wrote the white paper to explain how to do it with modern technology. They rejected it as too ambitious - then invited me back two years later to build it. This delivered a significant market advantage. Morgan Stanley needed a global sub-ledger capable of a billion calculations a day with full resilience. It didn't exist anywhere in the industry. Until it did. BP Pulse had a messy EV technology estate burning cash and going nowhere fast. I consolidated it, rebuilt what mattered, applied LLM and AI where it actually moved the needle - and enabled significant new revenue streams in the process. Now I'm CTO at Hubber - a well-capitalised infrastructure company founded by the team that built Tesla's UK Supercharger network. I'm building the technology layer for the next generation of high-powered urban EV charging across UK cities - and designing it from the ground up to support Autonomous Vehicles, because that era is coming whether the market is ready or not.The infrastructure gap is real. The market is enormous. And we intend to own it. I'm hands-on in a way that surprises people at this level. I can architect the platform, write the code, present the roadmap at board level, and mentor the engineer sitting next to me - sometimes all in the same week. I've led teams of 600. I've also been the only technologist in the room. I'm comfortable at both ends. "We can pull the wool over Jeroen's eyes" is a phrase that has never been said. If you're building something ambitious - in EV infrastructure, Autonomous Vehicles, payments, fintech, or anywhere complex technology meets serious commercial stakes - I'm worth a conversation.

Experience

  • Chief Technology Officer at Ubiq Consulting
    Feb 2018 - Present · 8 yrs 5 mos

Fractional and Interim CTO across multiple domains - helping scale-ups grow and supporting VC/PE-backed companies transform back to generating value. I provide both strategic and tactical leadership alongside hands-on engineering - predominantly across FinTech scale-ups, payments businesses, and emerging EV charging companies. Whether that means setting a three-year architecture roadmap, writing code at a critical moment, or telling a board something they don't want to hear - I do what the situation needs.

  • Chief Technology Officer at bp
    May 2023 - Sep 2025 · 2 yrs 5 mos

Brought in to bring order from chaos in BP Pulse - BP's fastest-growing division and its premier bet on the energy transition. Inherited a fragmented global technology estate spanning multiple regions, platforms, and codebases. Consolidated it into a single Federated Platform - driving economies of scale, unifying the technology base, and eliminating the duplication that was burning budget and slowing delivery. Introduced modern digital operating models and engineering practices across BP Pulse and into wider BP - changing not just the platforms but how the organisation thought about technology. Delivered three significant AI initiatives, each generating material operating cost savings - applying AI where it actually moved the needle rather than where it looked good in a presentation. Accountable for 300+ engineers, architects, and product staff across the UK, Europe, US, APAC, and China, with a $60m annual digital budget.

  • Chief Technology Officer (part of Ubiq Consulting) at Bnext
    Jan 2022 - Mar 2023 · 1 yr 3 mos

Appointed as CTO to this high-growth Spanish digital bank, bringing deep payments architecture and hands-on engineering expertise to an ambitious and fast-moving financial services business. Designed and delivered one of the world's first real-time cross-border A2A payment systems built on blockchain and crypto rails - a genuine industry first at the time. Brought banking-grade architecture thinking to a scale-up environment - bridging the gap between innovation speed and the rigour that regulated financial services demands.

  • CTO (part of Ubiq Consulting) at Modu.Digital
    Apr 2020 - Jan 2022 · 1 yr 10 mos

Board-level consulting across candidate FinTech companies in Europe and APAC - advising on strategic direction, evaluating M&A opportunities, and identifying partnerships that actually move the needle. Specialising in Banking and Payments, with a focus on cloud-native, microservice-driven and event-based target architectures. Not just strategy - hands-on execution of technology implementation and methodology adoption where it was needed. The companies I worked with got both the roadmap and the person who could deliver it.

  • Head Of Architecture (part of Ubiq Consulting) at Gamesys
    Mar 2019 - Mar 2020 · 1 yr 1 mo

Engaged to lead the architectural transformation of a major gaming and gambling platform - returning agility and technology leadership to an organisation that had lost both. Led a team of 12 architects and provided indirect leadership across the broader engineering organisation - driving the shift to a componentised, event-based microservices architecture that gave product and engineering teams back the ability to move fast without breaking things. The kind of engagement where the mandate is clear and the politics are not - and where getting the architecture right from the front saves millions in rework later.
