About

I have managed automotive testing projects, which included writing proposals, conducting technical work, producing weekly presentations, and writing final reports, for government and commercial clients over the past 15 years. The projects have ranged from one week with a $25,000 budget to multi-year projects with annual budgets of up to $2 million. Most of this time has been spent testing heavy-duty vehicles on chassis dynamometers. When I started at SwRI in 2001, I performed exhaust emission tests on heavy-duty vehicles with a 1960’s-era mechanical, flywheel inertia chassis dynamometers producing about $125,000 annually. In 2002, I commissioned a newly installed, but used 1990’s-era electric chassis dynamometer and over the next 12 years made control system and electric drive improvements that expanded the market for heavy-duty vehicle testing by improving the precision and accuracy of the dynamometer and by delivering quality data in a timely manner. Two of the major improvements made to the chassis dynamometer were replacing a human driver with drive-by-wire and replacing torque control with speed control. The result of these technical improvements, along with a reputation for conducting work on time and within budget, resulted in a rise of repeat business and expanded business opportunities. After 12 years of continuous facility improvements, this activity grew to an annual revenue of $1.5M.
