About

I am an academic, which means I combine research, teaching and management tasks (e.g., managing a group of about 25 researchers, editorial duties for journals, management tasks for department, university, professional organizations, research councils, etc.). In my research, I try to address important questions in novel ways, while building on a particular research tradition (I am not one of those who ignore the history of our science). In my teaching, I try to pass on important lessons, not just the most recent trends. I try to foster critical thinking and deep understanding, not superficial lists of facts. I emphasize analytical thinking while also encouraging daring syntheses. My management tasks I consider as a service to the community (students, researchers, colleagues). Hence, I try to do well, be open-minded and honest, and care for people, but I also try to be efficient in what I do. The last few years I have been able to do more of the things I like (e.g., read, think, write, engage in fun projects like collaborations with visual artists). Specialties: vision research, research management, science writing and editing
