Toronto, Ontario, Canada
I am an established independent editor and proofreader with a focus on nonfiction and a particular interest in food & drink, wellness, memoir, history, travel, and business. One of my specialties is editing high-quality, complex illustrated books in the areas of corporate history, reference, fine art, and the culinary arts. I also edit corporate and non-profit communications. As well, I instruct courses on copy editing and stylistic editing in both the certificate publishing program at Toronto Metropolitan University and SFU's Continuing Studies' Editing Certificate, and a course on recipe and cookbook editing that I developed for TMU Chang's publishing program. Over the past three decades, I've worked closely with trade and university publishers, book packagers, designers, and authors of all backgrounds (including self-publishing authors), often seeing manuscripts through the editorial process from near conception to printing — my many years of in-house experience mean I understand the “big picture” of publishing. Taking personal responsibility for the editorial details, I recognize when to use a light or heavier hand on the text to polish it to a bright shine that reflects the author’s message and expertise in a clear and compelling way — keeping the reader top of mind while always respecting the author’s voice. Authors and clients have described me as “meticulous,” "a true pro,” and “a joy to work with.” I love what I do, and I believe that shows in my work and in the strong relationships I take pride in developing with those involved. copy editing ◦ stylistic editing ◦ proofreading ◦ content | structural editing ◦ recipe | cookbook editing ◦ recipe writing ◦ online | e-books ◦ editing to fit | condensing ◦ house style development ◦ caption writing ◦ instructing ◦ consulting ◦ corporate | non-profit communications ◦ curriculum development
