The persisting global inequities in health are the driving force behind my research and professional interests. I believe these injustices are not natural laws, but human creations, and therefore through our collective actions we can build more equitable and sustainable (health) systems. Within my global health research and teaching activities, I apply my interdisciplinary training in medicine, social epidemiology and clinical epidemiology. My work focusses on health equity, maternal health, planetary health and equitable partnerships in global health - through transdisciplinary collaborations in research, education, capacity strengthening and public engagement.
My research focusses on maternal health (especially hypertensive disorders of pregnancy), health equity, equitable partnerships and planetary health. For more information about the main research project, the transdisicplinary SPOT-study to improve the quality of care for women with preeclampsia in Ghana, see: https://www.umcutrecht.nl/en/research/research-topic/the-spot-study My education activities include BSc, MSc, and summer school courses in Global Health and Planetary Health, capacity strengthening collaborations, internationalization @home development, establishment of equitable partnerships in Global Health education, and development of education opportunities for refugee-students. I am a member of the UU Global Engagement Core Group on behalf of the Strategic Theme of Life Sciences, UMC Utrecht Internationalization Committee, the UU-Anton de Kom University (Suriname) collaboration committee and UU Open Science Fellow for Public Engagement. I hold an affiliation with the Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance (REBO).
