Joshua is a confident and ambitious sustainability programme delivery leader with circa 15 years’ experience in the industry, currently working as a Sustainability and Responsible Banking Senior Manager for Santander UK, with an integrated Masters in Environmental Sciences, Full membership to the Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals (ISEP) and Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv).
My main responsibilities include: • Develop and deliver our Sustainability and Responsible Banking long-term vision and strategy, in line with Santander UK’s purpose to help customers make their better happen. Lead on periodic materiality assessments to support prioritisation. • Lead briefings and creation of documentation for senior leadership on sustainability strategy, targets, metrics, data, reporting, disclosures, operating model and governance, ensuring we run our business more sustainably and responsibly and responding to the expectations of investors, regulators, customers, and civil society. • Act as a subject matter expert to influence the business divisions to embed Sustainability within their business strategy and objectives and deliver against the company’s Sustainability ambition. • Lead on evolving ESG target operating model in SanUK to respond to new regulatory requirements and to ensure effective management of material ESG topics. • Lead, co-ordinate and influence the bank wide response to ESG regulatory requirements such as those from the FCA, PRA, SEC, EU, ISSB, TCFD and TNFD. • Lead the creation of ESG risk appetite & ESG targets in addition to within the Santander UK bonus scorecard and performance plans, aligning and contributing to Group PXX targets working with ExCo, Responsible Banking Committee and Remuneration Committee. • Lead and oversee our Sustainability (ESG) investor engagement programme, including communications and participation in roadshows as required, and continuously evolve approach to respond to increasing demands. • Lead the management of SanUK ESG policies and internal/external audits, and subsequent integration into business operations. • Lead on ESG reporting, including the annual sustainability report, annual report content and disclosures to our parent company, ensuring compliance with EU, US and UK ESG regulations. • Represent Santander externally in industry bodies such as UK Finance or industry forums.
My key responsibilities include: • Develop and deliver our Sustainability strategy, in line with Santander UK’s purpose to help people and businesses prosper. Lead on periodic materiality assessments to support prioritisation. • Deliver our ambition on chosen strategic priorities, setting strategy, metrics, liaising with external organisations and coordinating different stakeholders. Prepare and deliver progress reports for senior stakeholders including board-level committees. • Lead on Sustainability and ESG reporting, including the annual sustainability report (ESG Supplement) and annual report content, ensuring compliance with best-in-class reporting frameworks and standards (e.g. GRI, SASB). Support climate reporting aligned to TCFD. • Oversee external and internal audits as required, including an annual audit of our reporting. • Drive the collection of data/KPIs to feed into sustainability reports, working across business functions and ensuring accuracy and consistency of the data/information. • Act as a subject matter expert and support the business divisions to embed Sustainability within their business strategy and objectives and deliver against the company’s Sustainability targets and ambition. • Identify and implement enabling technology and design appropriate processes to drive automation, simplification, standardisation and data quality of Sustainability data. • Together with Investor Relations, lead our Sustainability (ESG) investor engagement programme, including communications and participation in roadshows as required. • Oversee ESG policies, including review of the Sustainability Policy and related policies. • Oversee collation of data and information for Group Sustainability reporting as required through the year. • Support the development of our communications, establishing a strong corporate narrative on sustainability and promotion through appropriate channels including our website. • Line management.
• Responsible for all live development projects in London, with a combined value of circa £3 billion, in which I lead our supply chain, clients and project teams to achieve their project sustainability requirements. Projects to date include: 30 Grosvenor Square, 65 Davies Street, Auriens Chelsea, Bankside Yards, Chelsea Barracks Phase 4, DAMAC Tower, Elephant and Castle Town Centre, Marble Arch Place, One Blackfriars, One Leadenhall, One Nine Elms, The Broadway and The Glebe • Key responsibilities on these sites are the day-to-day environmental management in line with the business ISO14001:2015, meeting the client environmental standards, delivery of sustainability assessments targets (e.g. BREEAM, CSH, LEED and WELL), community liaison, environmental planning conditions close out, Section 106 local employability delivery and Section 61 applications. • I also lead the sustainability communications, reporting, and training function for the business to bring sustainability to a larger audience implementing change across the business and the wider industry as part of Multiplex’s vision to become a net-positive business. • Finally, I am also responsible for recruitment and line management of more junior members of the Sustainability Team including Sustainability Graduates, Sustainability Coordinators and Sustainability Managers.
• In this role I deliver the sustainability requirements of high profile developments worth over £1.5 billion in value, this includes Auriens Chelsea, Bankside Yards, DAMAC Tower, Marble Arch Place, One Blackfriars, One Nine Elms and The Broadway. • I also drive change across the business and our value chain as the lead for the Sustainability Team’s Communication and Training Working Group. • Line management of more junior members of the Sustainability Team including Sustainability Graduates and Assistant Sustainability Managers. • Key responsibilities include: 1. Driving the Multiplex sustainability strategy ensuring the company remains at the forefront of sustainability leadership and innovation and remains economically, social and environmentally sustainable 2. Provide support to the projects on meeting and exceeding objectives relevant to environmental contractual commitments, regulations, laws and policies. This requires involvement in the Bid, Pre-Construction, Design, Procurement and Construction and Handover Phase of the project and potentially beyond. 3. Implement, on the projects, the requirements of the company sustainability strategy and its management through the ISO 14001-certified environmental management system and related procedures and software e.g. the company environmental recording and reporting system Metrics (SMARTWaste). 4. Leading and supporting the Sustainability Working Groups based around the Multiplex Sustainability Strategy 5. Exploring opportunities for sustainability innovations and driving their implementation 6. Develop working relationships with relevant industry bodies as well as enforcing authorities specific to the projects 7. Environmental award submissions 8. Participate and give talks in industry networks and events in order to keep up to date and to raise the company’s profile. 9. Line management duties.
During this role I was responsible for the following on the One Blackfriars Road development. Preparation, design, mobilisation phase • Draft and agree the Environmental Sustainability Management Plan • Identify BREEAM and CfSH actions and other project-specific requirements for the project • Work with the project team to develop project-specific strategies for meeting environmental requirements e.g. material plans, waste prevention and minimisation, noise plans, environmental incident prevention and response plan, biodiversity plans, • Metrics (online reporting portal) set-up • Metrics subcontractor training • Conduct design-out-waste and resource efficiency workshops, chase, collect, collate ideas and finalise them with the Project Manager • Embed within the project’s BIM to enhance and streamline sustainability outcomes and calculations Procurement / commercial / contracts • Ensure the contract documents contain all the requirements relevant to the designers subcontractors and suppliers including any BREEAM, CfSH and other project-specific requirements Construction/operational phase • Initiate and chair environmental kick-off project team meeting • Support team members with sustainability-related duties • Participate in BREEAM and CfSH meetings/workshops with external parties • Work with the project team to implement project-specific strategies for meeting environmental requirements e.g. carbon, energy and water reduction, responsible sourcing, waste prevention and minimisation, noise plans, environmental incident prevention and response plan, biodiversity plans as well as assist in driving wellbeing and anti- slavery actions • Liaise with BREEAM, CfSH and Considerate Constructors Scheme assessors and drive implementation of requirements • Community liaison including management and close of complaints/compliments • Delivery of local employability targets • Subcontractor management • Training • Reviewing and Reporting
• In this role I had the opportunity to work across a range of sustainability projects with a specific focus on waste minimisation and resource efficiency. • This includes working as a Support Practitioner for the award winning National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP) developing resource efficient synergies among member organisations, conducting environmental audits for a range of organisations across the UK including waste management, industrial and construction sites and providing waste and resource efficiency training to in-house facility managers. • Other wider sustainability projects have included creating environmental legal and other requirements registers for several clients including a chemical manufacturing organisation; organising and undertaking extensive stakeholder engagement on behalf of a local authority as part of its second formal consultation of its Local Plan; assisting a range of blue chip organisations with their annual environmental reports and disclosures to the CDP; conducting carbon footprints of large proposed infrastructure projects across the world and completing an annual carbon and water footprint of a large multinational organisation; and, investigating the potential ethical, social and environmental issues of the natural raw materials used in the supply chain of global fast moving consumer goods company.
• The role entailed assisting with Code for Sustainable Homes and BREEAM assessments for local and regional developments. • Additionally I was required to aid the writing of environmental sustainability statements and overarching sustainability statements necessary for developments to secure planning permission. • I received on the job training in local policy searching and completed the Construction Skills Certificate Scheme (CSCS) exam in order to be allowed on construction sites. • After successfully completing an 11 week placement I was offered a full time position at the organisation as a graduate sustainability consultant.
• Successfully pitched to Skandia to complete a 1st stage ISO 14001 Environmental Management System for their building portfolio in Southampton. • Worked as part of a team of three to design and deliver an Environmental Management System to the ISO14001 certification standard.
• Conducted an initial environmental review of a housing association in Hampshire as part of a small team for the degree programme. This required us to complete the preliminary stages of an ISO14001 Environmental Management System whilst outlining potential recommendations for improved environmental and economic performance. • Through desktop research and multiple site visits the team and I were able to outline approximately £50,000 worth of cost savings and an additional £50,000 worth of extra revenue per annum for the organisation. • Presented our findings to the senior management including the CEO and were congratulated on our first class work and the recommendations made
