Hey! I'm a data scientist/machine learning engineer who works on end-to-end artificial intelligence (AI) solutions from problem statement ideation, model development, all the way to production deployment in the financial sector. I have led and worked on AI projects that involve agentic large language model (LLM) systems, credit scoring, natural language processing (NLP), anti-money laundering (AML), nowcasting etc. I have also had the privilege of being the first data scientist/ML engineer at Aeon Bank, Malaysia's first Islamic digital bank, to build up an entire MLOps system on Kubernetes using open-source tools and productionize real-time predictive models. Occasionally, I develop Streamlit applications that consume and display model predictions because sometimes people need to see the magic in action to believe it! In a previous life, I was running around banks as an associate supervisor assessing their market, credit and operational risks. I was finding ways to make them manageable but eventually realized that the biggest risk of all was ignoring my growing interest in the field of artificial intelligence. That's why I had to make the transition. I'm also a strong believer in online education and continuous learning. In 2018, I enrolled in an online certificate program called the MicroMasters in Statistics and Data Science that claimed to offer graduate level university courses with the same rigor as the equivalent residential versions. The verdict: I entered a skeptical guy but left impressed and hopeful for the power and potential of online education. Finally, I enjoy mentoring people both in the technology space and in business/strategic thinking whenever I can squeeze in some free time. Young people inspire me because they have the courage to say and do the darnedest things.
Led a team of 2 ML engineers and 3 data scientists to develop and deploy AI solutions for Malaysia’s first Islamic digital bank that launched in May 2024, serving 140K customers within the first year. As the first data scientist/ML engineer at Aeon Bank, I led the research and development initiative to build up an MLOps/ML system on Kubernetes using open-source tools which includes model training pipelines, experiment tracking, model registry, data pipelines, online and offline feature store, stream processing engine, model observability, model inference API endpoints, model evaluation pipelines and CI/CD pipelines. Also worked on AI projects involving agentic large language model (LLM) systems, credit scoring, anti-money laundering (AML) and spending transaction categorization.
Led the technical development of end-to-end data science solutions at the Central Bank of Malaysia from ideation, model development to deployment. Worked on various projects across the Bank such as Covid-19 vaccination data processing, supervisory letter tone analysis, interbank exposure network analysis, vegetable price nowcasting and human resources text analysis. Advised more than 10 internal departments on their data science needs and use cases including conducting project demonstrations. Promoted data science awareness and upskilling initiatives including presenting projects and use-cases to senior management, teaching data science courses, organizing data visualization competitions and curating online data science course catalogues.
Performed risk assessments and supervisory interventions across Malaysian banks’ treasury market activities, asset & liability management (ALM) and corporate banking operations.
