Scott Graham's 'Shell' Wins Top Award at Turin Fest. Shell, a domestic drama set in the Scottish highlands from Scott Graham, took home the Best Film award at the Turin Film Festival. Review sight & Sound : "Mawle is astounding as the intense, conflicted father whose guilt over his life choices consumes him" This engrossing drama is one of the more remarkable break-out features of the London Film Festival. The debut of writer-director Scott Graham, this slow-burner set in the Scottish Highlands is a fascinating study of isolation. Newcomer Chloe Pirrie is captivating as the titular Shell, a 17-year-old girl who lives with her mechanic father Pete (Joseph Mawle) at their remote petrol station. There's an eeriness to Shell and Pete's self-sufficiency and reliance on each other - it's as if they were the last two people on earth. Graham's take on this dependency is deliberately disorienting; it's hard to judge the pair's relationship. However, the film takes these themes down an unexpected, disarming path that is delicately handled. What makes Shell such a uniquely brilliant film is the wealth of talent in front of and behind the camera and Graham's assured control. Pirrie, in her mid-twenties, gives Shell a rich complexity; there's a primal confidence burning within the wide-eyed innocence. Mawle is astounding as the intense, conflicted father whose guilt over his life choices consumes him. German cinematographer Yoliswa Gärtig captures the harsh windswept landscape without beautifying the land, and there's a calmness to the ugly side of country life. Graham's film is dripping with unease, giving it a welcome tension. It's an odd observation, but a crucial one - it's surprising to learn Shell is written and directed by a man, so perceptive, sensitive and perfectly studied is this character piece on a young woman. Rating: 9/10
