I initially attained an interest in becoming an active member of my community when I decided to volunteer for the local fire department for a few years, which helped me gain the experience of a first responder due to our rural town resulting in more medical calls than fire calls. Due to this, I was given more opportunities to take the lead at each scene as the more experienced firefighters were to stand by until their assistance was necessary. The many training scenarios that revolved around treating a patient both physically and verbally vastly helped with solidifying this for when the time came for us to do it on the field. And since speaking to a patient requires compassion, active listening, and the level-headedness to apply a methodological approach, I then became interested in psychology. As for my interest in criminal justice, that arose when quite a few of our calls required us to interact with paramedics and law enforcement alike. So during my studies at the university, I was employed as a parking enforcement representative and a sales associate for life insurance as I was exploring the different paths I could take for expanding my influence to a much larger community than I was accustomed to. My adaptability to a variety of different environments has granted me access to a multitude of industries before finally deciding to narrow my focus within the mental health industry. The skills I attained from several unrelated fields such as in the automotive industry, the airline industry, and more have allowed me to consolidate certain skills such as customer service, leadership, collaboration, and other transferable technical skills. And now that I have become more resilient in managing multiple responsibilities, I am determined in progressing my career path in the mental health industry as I apply for graduate programs with a specialization in clinical psychology whilst working on maintaining my mental and physical health and working as a behavior technician with children on the spectrum for autism. Especially since the effects of the pandemic have had a massive impact on society as a whole, particularly in regard to mental health. I aspire to be an effective and efficient aide to those within my community as my influence continues to grow as I progress more and more in my set career path, from social work to applied behavior analysis.
