About

Since 2019, I am a partner and bridge designer at Ney & Partners. I am managing director of the Delft office in the Netherlands. Additionally, I am an associate professor at Delft University of Technology, where I teach Bridge Design. I'm head of the Bridge Design Group, a combined initiative from the faculties of Architecture and Civil Engineering, with the aim to educate students in the art of bridge design and to conduct research towards sustainable and innovative bridges and infrastructures. From 1987 until 1994, I studied at Delft University of Technology where I combined two studies, Civil Engineering and Architecture. I graduated for both in 1994 and thus became an architect as well as a civil engineer. I believe that it is my understanding of the way that structures work, the way that materials behave and my knowledge of the integral building process that has profoundly defined me as an architect. In the field I am widely recognized as an architect-engineer due to the design of a wide range of bridges and other infrastructures. With my projects I have won several prizes, both in the Netherlands and abroad. Sustainable building is my special interest. My research focuses on the architectural application of FRP composites in load bearing structures. My designs are rational yet expressive, and are defined by the interaction between man and his environment. In this manner I have designed over 300 bridges and buildings, 100 of which have been realised, a feat that I'm particularly proud of. I see it as my mission to bridge the gap that so often exists between architects, engineers and principals. In that respect I am indebted to Vitruvius, the most famous architect from antiquity, who taught us that a structure can only be of truly lasting value if it respects the balance between aesthetics, structure and function. This adage is still very valid today and constitutes the crux to my professional work.
