Full Professor of Film and Screen Media Cultures at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), where I served as Dean of the Faculty of Information and Communication between 2015 and 2025. I teach and conduct research in Film Studies, Cultural Analysis of Media, Popular Music, and Design Culture. I coordinate the Grupo de Investigación en Aprendizajes, Medios y Entretenimiento (GAME) [Learning, Media, and Entertainment], and served as editor of the book series Filmografías esenciales and Comunicación at Editorial UOC (2015-2025). Since 1989, I have been writing on cinema, animation, television, and comics. I was Director of the Saló Internacional del Còmic de Barcelona (1997–2000) and Deputy Director of the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia (2001–2004). I continue to collaborate with the Sitges festival as a programmer for the animation section (Anima’t) and as scientific curator for the Sitges Cocoon section. My teaching career began as a part-time lecturer at the Facultat de Comunicació Blanquerna (URL), where I taught semiotics, visual culture, and film theory from 1998 to 2006. There, I also co-directed the Postgrado en Crítica de cine y música pop (2000–2007). I joined the UOC in 2007, where I have taught subjects such as Film Studies, Music Industry and Popular Culture, Visual Culture, and Design Culture. I have held various academic leadership roles, including coordinator of Postgraduate Studies in Communication and Information (2008–2011) and director of the Máster en Cine Fantástico y Ficción Contemporánea (2015–2021). From 2015 to 2020, I was also a part-time lecturer in the Degree in Animation and VFX at La Salle (URL), where I created and taught the course Culture of Animation and VFX. As a researcher, I have published over 37 articles in indexed journals, authored 10 books, and edited 13 volumes. Notable publications include Tim Burton. Cuentos en sombras (2000), Freaks en acción. Álex de la Iglesia o el cine como fuga (2005), Narrativa audiovisual (2006), Pantalla rasgada. Quince conversaciones con cineastas y escritores sobre cine y sueños (with Desirée de Fez, 2014), and La imaginación tangible. Una historia esencial del cine de animación (2020). Beyond academia, I regularly contribute to film and music magazines such as SoFilm and Rockdelux. Since 2018, I have also co-hosted Marea Nocturna, a podcast I co-created with Desirée de Fez, Ángel Sala, and Xavi Sánchez Pons, streaming on Radio Primavera Sound.

Coordinator of the Research Group GAME (Grupo de investigación en Aprendizajes, Medios y Entretenimiento). Consolidated research group recognized by the Government of Catalonia (SGR 2017). Its aim is to conduct advanced research on the communication ecosystem and on the relationship between communication and the different forms of learning that emerge in contemporary digital cultures.
Member of the festival’s Programming Committee Board.
Responsible for programming the Anima’t section, which features animated feature films (Spanish premieres) and shorts. An international jury awards prizes for Best Short and Best Feature. The winning short automatically qualifies for consideration by the Hollywood Oscars® Selection Committee. Duties include scouting, selecting, and programming films, requiring continuous research on trends in animated cinema.
