About

A Cambridge History degree isn't a typical route into sales, however the core skill is the same: reading an unclear situation, building the strongest possible case from incomplete information, and making that case clearly and persuasively to someone who needs convincing. I've spent the past several months proving that out directly, by building an independent fitness coaching business from scratch. I identified a specific problem within fitness content, built messaging that spoke directly to it, and used that to start real sales conversations; both through content-driven DMs and direct in-person outreach to people I knew were struggling and could genuinely help. No team, no budget, no existing audience to rely on. The proof isn't in follower count, as my reach is genuinely small. It's in the close rate: 5 paying clients secured directly through 1-on-1 conversations, off the back of outreach and content most people would consider too niche to convert. Delivery (structured training and nutrition plans, ongoing accountability) matters to me and to the client, but the part I actually want to build a career on is what happens before that: finding the right person, understanding their problem, and closing the conversation. Why sales, specifically? Because it's the one profession where the result is undeniable: you either closed it or you didn't. That kind of honest feedback is rare and valuable; I'd rather build a career on something measurable and real than on a title that sounds impressive, but doesn't tell you anything about whether the work is good. I'm now looking for an SDR/BDR role at a company selling complex B2B products; somewhere the sales conversation actually requires judgement, not just volume, and where I can learn from people who are genuinely excellent at this.
