https://jjohnjones.github.io/ Hello, my name is John, and I am an Electrical Engineering student with a Computer Science minor at Miami University. I have found that my real passion lies right in the middle of hardware and software. I learn best by building things with my own two hands, whether that means wiring up a physical circuit or writing the code that brings it to life. For me, a project is not just about making something turn on. It is about understanding the whole system from the ground up. My classes and personal projects have given me a solid foundation in how physical electronics operate. I spend a lot of time working with power systems, signal processing, and microcontrollers. I also enjoy designing my own circuit boards. But hardware is only half the picture. To make these physical parts actually do something useful, I write code in C, C++, and Python, and I work with hardware languages like Verilog. Connecting a physical sensor to a board and then writing the logic to process that data is what I enjoy doing the most. I have had some great chances to put these skills to the test outside of class. During the MakeOHIO hackathon, my team built a device called the Universal Translator. I helped wire a camera to an Arduino and wrote the software to display translations on a small screen. We ran into a lot of bugs trying to get the hardware and software to communicate without lagging, but fixing those issues was a great learning experience, and we ended up winning second place. I also enjoy building standalone software. I won a statewide C# programming competition two years in a row, and I recently worked as the lead developer for a local business to build them a modern, user friendly website. Beyond just building things, I care a lot about making sure systems are accessible and safe. In my software engineering internship at CareSource, I learned how to work on a professional team, write clean code, and create helpful documentation. Right now, I work as an intern at Miami University to make sure our digital tools can be used by everyone. Finally, because security is so important today, I regularly compete in cybersecurity events. I recently took third place in a statewide competition where I had to solve puzzles related to web security and reverse engineering. My ultimate goal is to blend my electrical background with my software skills to create technology that is reliable, useful, and secure.
