R&D MANAGEMENT: Conducted, managed and led R&D projects and programs to address crucial problems facing the South African Gold and Coal mining industries, ultimately as Head of the Chamber of Mines Research Organisation, COMRO. POLICY DEVELOPMENT: Led the development and advocacy of policy positions on issues relevant to the mining industry, including National Science and Technology Policy, Health and Safety Legislation, Environmental Management Legislation and Water Policy. SYSTEMS ANALYSIS AND PROCESS FACILITATION: Convened, led and participated in international panels to review National Institutions and R&D Programs, including, Council for Geoscience, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), National Strategy for Advanced Manufacturing Technology, National Initiative to develop Advanced Metals, and National Program on Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology. LEADERSHIP - International: Represented the South African mining industry in international forums, including International Labour Organisation, International Committee for Coal Research, Assurance Group of Global MMSD project, and Mining Industry Associations of Southern Africa. LEADERSHIP - National: Served on National Bodies, including National Advisory Council on Innovation, National Science and Technology Forum, Mine Health and Safety Council and Board of National Nuclear Regulator. CONSULTING PROJECT MANAGEMENT: Conducted various assignments related to the mining industry, in the fields of Science and Technology, Sustainable Development and Occupational Health and Safety. SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT AND CHANGE MANAGEMENT: In collaboration with Decision Partners of Pittsburgh USA, developed systems to identify, document and facilitate the widespread adoption of leading practice to address health and safety issues in key risk areas in South African Mines. Documented the system and processes in the form of a guidance handbook, and assisted with implementation of this change management initiative.
