About

John O'Brien, Ph.D., FARVO is the Benedict-McFadden Professor in the Department of Vision Science of the University of Houston College of Optometry. Dr. O’Brien’s research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of electrical synaptic plasticity and the role that this plasticity plays in visual adaptation. His lab uses in vitro studies to identify molecular mechanisms and translates these to mammalian and zebrafish model systems using a variety of cellular, molecular, and genetic approaches. Dr. O'Brien's lab also studies regeneration of neurons in zebrafish models of retinal degeneration using molecular and genetic techniques.
