Istanbul, Istanbul, Türkiye
Hi, I’m John McSherry — a London-born English teacher, teacher trainer, and creative thinker with over three decades of international experience, primarily based in Turkey since 1990. I’m passionate about empowering students of all ages and levels to find their voice in English, whether they’re prepping for exams like IELTS or TOEFL, building business fluency, or simply striving to speak with confidence. After earning my BA in Graphic Design in the early 80s, I took a leap into TEFL in 1990, and I've never looked back. I’ve taught in summer schools across the UK, elite prep programs in Istanbul, and corporate boardrooms in Moda. Over the years, I’ve worn many hats: Business English instructor, university prep teacher, teacher trainer, and course designer. I’m currently Head Teacher at Carelend Academy and also teach advanced adult learners at American Culture. I hold a DELTA, have completed Cambridge examiner training (KET/PET), and am currently working on my MA in Education with East London University. Recently, I’ve taken courses in Facilitation Skills and Trainer Training to refine my work with future educators. I’ve also created and delivered bespoke teacher training programs and love mentoring new teachers as much as I love helping learners crack tough exams. Alongside teaching, I’m always on the lookout for freelance projects that combine education, creativity, and technology. I develop original learning materials, integrate AI tools into the classroom, and compose motivational songs on platforms like Suno — blending language and rhythm to inspire and engage. I'm fluent in Turkish, endlessly curious, and fueled by a strong belief in lifelong learning. When I'm not teaching or designing a new course, you'll likely find me reading a biography, watching historical dramas, or exploring alternative media on BitChute. Oh, and yes — I do enjoy a good escape into the world of cinema and the occasional philosophical rabbit hole. With decades of hands-on experience and a forward-thinking mindset, I’m now excited to branch out into freelance consulting, content creation, online training, and maybe even a bit of globe-trotting while I’m at it.
