Shore-to-Ship (STS) Crane Operator manages massive gantry cranes to load and unload containers between deep-sea vessels and the dock, ensuring safe, efficient, and precise cargo handling. Key responsibilities include operating, controlling, and inspecting equipment, while adhering to strict safety protocols. Key Responsibilities Operating Equipment: Utilizing joysticks and control panels in high-mounted cabins to maneuver the spreader, lifting, and transferring containers between ships, trucks, and railcars. Safety & Compliance: Following strict safety procedures to prevent injury and cargo damage, including managing proper balance, avoiding off-center loads, and conducting pre/post-shift inspections. Maintenance: Performing first-line maintenance, including troubleshooting and reporting malfunctions of the crane's mechanical and electrical systems. Efficiency & Productivity: Maximizing container movement rates and reducing vessel turnaround times through skilled, precise movements. Coordination: Communicating with ship crews and deck workers for synchronized cargo placement, often in a "hot seat" (continuous) operation. Required Skills and Qualifications Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience operating large-capacity shore or ship cranes. Certifications: Valid crane operator certification and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Physical Abilities: Excellent hand-eye coordination, hearing, and the ability to work at heights for extended periods. Technical Knowledge: Understanding of crane mechanics, safety regulations (e.g., OSHA/ASME), and, in some cases, basic IT skills for container tracking systems. Working Conditions Work occurs in busy port environments, often involving rotating shifts, weekends, and exposure to varying weather conditions. Operators are responsible for maintaining a clean and safe crane cabin and lift.
