Johannes Rauchenberger is a curator for contemporary art, an art historian, and a theologian. As a cultural publicist and lecturer at the Universities of Graz and Vienna, he examines questions of contemporary art and religion. He has managed a multidisciplinary center for contemporary art, contemporary culture, and religion in Graz since 2000—the Kulturzentrum bei den Minoriten. Born in 1969; studied Art History and Theology in Graz, Austria, and Tübingen and Cologne, Germany. He wrote his PhD thesis on “Biblische Bildlichkeit. Kunst – Raum theologischer Erkenntnis” (Biblical Pictoriality. Art Space of Theological Knowledge; Schoeningh, 1999). He was research assistant at the ‘Bildtheologische Arbeitsstelle’ of the University of Cologne from 1997 to 2002. He has managed the Kulturzentrum bei den Minoriten, Graz, a multidisciplinary center for contemporary art, contemporary culture, and religion since 2000. He has been responsible for more than 120 exhibitions, among them large exhibitions such as “Himmelschwer“. He has been editor of the ecumenical art magazine kunst und kirche since 2002; he has been a lecturer for art and religion at the University of Vienna since 2004, and also at the University of Graz since 2009. In his new publication "GOD HAS NO MUSEUM. Religion in Art in the Early 21st Century" (1120 pages, 3 volumes, Schöningh: Paderborn 2015) he presents in this book in the form of a “virtual museum”—which he relates to religious questions in the early 21st century—is both the exhibition history and the collection of contemporary art he has built up in the KULTUMdepot in recent years.
