  • Temporary Material Handler at Thermo Fisher Scientific
    Jan 2022 - Mar 2022 · 3 mos

As a Temporary Material Handler, my work consisted of picking, packing, auditing and assist in warehouse related activities. A great majority of my job consists of picking items around the warehouse. I had to pick products that are kept in the ambient environment, some in a cold room (2°C to 8°C), other in a freezer room (-5°C to -20°C) and some even in a -80°C fridge. As a person who enjoys Science, I enjoyed seeing so much dry ice at first. However, I had to shovel at least a metric ton of it every day. I was tasked to follow strict procedures and standards to ensure workplace safety and cleanliness, due to the majority of products being meant for the medical industry. Additionally, I first handedly saw the effects of the sudden border closure/extension in Shanghai on the shipping industry, with many orders being put on hold, and no space to put in the warehouse. We had to get creative with the space, squeezing the pallets of orders into every nook and cranny we could find. Although the job was physically and mentally demanding, it helped me learn more about the real world and allowed me to practice effective workplace communication. It also made me realise that in the working world, basic vocabulary is often times more productive, practical and effective compared to fancy vocabulary.

  • Temporary Warehouse Assistant at Cotton On Group
    Nov 2021 - Dec 2021 · 2 mos

From this experience, I learnt a lot about the logistics and e-commerce industry and what goes on behind the scenes when you buy something online. As a Temp Warehouse Assistant for Cotton On Group Pte Ltd, my main responsibility is to facilitate picking and packing activities for stores and online orders (both local and international); especially for the holiday rush (Singles Day, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, 11/11 Sale, 12/12 Sale and Christmas). I had to learn how to use a scanner to assist me in picking the correct product, and a portable printer to print the shipping label. I take pride in ensuring that the pick order is as accurate as possible so that there are no disruptions for the packers or even store personnel in the next stage. Although the job can be physically demanding, it is also rewarding completing an order and making new friends in the process. I was also rather humbling, knowing that you are working for something bigger than yourself.
