  • Care Assistant/Paediatric Nurse at Northern Ireland Hospice
    Aug 2008 - Mar 2010 · 1 yr 8 mos

Commenced employment as a Care Assistant, while in attendance at university. From November 2009 onwards I transferred to the position of a Registered Nurse. I gained valuable experience in the field of palliative care, where a strong emphasis was placed on adopting a holistic approach within a homely atmosphere. I had to delegate and supervise other members of staff. A wide range of communication skills were utilised there in relation to children with limited hearing and/or speech and with those who were visually impaired. The majority of children I cared for had severe learning disabilities and were in the hospice for respite. Communication with family members during a time of life threatening illness or the provision of end of life care was difficult but beneficial and I found I had a good ability to build good strong relationships with the families.
