Does this sound familiar? Delayed development projects, market flops, rising costs, and frustrated teams? The same meetings over and over again, where everyone's just looking for excuses? You've tried many things, yet despite numerous corrections, the same problems keep recurring and product development becomes a bottleneck instead of a growth engine. According to studies, only 6%–10% of CEOs are satisfied with the results of their R&D departments. Are you one of them? I'm Joachim Bauer, with 30 years of leadership experience in Development & Innovation—in both mid-sized companies and large corporations. What drives me is helping companies avoid failure in their development efforts. I combine strategic clarity with operational execution strength—and I make progress where others get stuck. My clients are technology-driven mid-sized companies and smaller corporations in the manufacturing industry (including medical technology) with in-house product development, who want to make development and innovation manageable, reliable, and impactful again. I work with CEOs, technical directors, and R&D leaders in a collaborative, open, and committed way. But I don't stay on the sidelines as a consultant. I also work directly with your teams on implementation, and I stay until the solution delivers. What changes through our collaboration? We achieve: - Clear and robust decisions - Shorter and more reliable development cycles - Greater market success - Adherence to cost and quality targets - Innovative product development In short: Your R&D department transforms from a constant construction site back into a true, reliable growth driver. My Approach: A tailored analysis of your current situation, focusing on: - Targeting bottlenecks and making precise interventions to resolve them - Ensuring the customer perspective is present in every phase of product development - Integrating all relevant players—internal and external - Rapid, integrative implementation, especially through small, tangible steps - No lengthy slide battles or massive transformation projects - Always by your side as a problem solver and enabler Here's how we work together: 1. We start where it hurts the most. 2. I uncover the real bottlenecks, friction points, and blockages in the interplay of market, product, organization, technology, and leadership. 3. We implement with precision—until the solution delivers. Curious? Simply send me a message here or via email ([email protected]), and we'll explore together how I can support you. Confidential and no strings attached.
R&D is your growth engine. Or it could be. It actually should be. Achieving ambitious growth targets without a functioning R&D organization is hard. Very hard. Many R&D departments are less capable than they could be. Often because bottlenecks aren't clearly identified and efforts are focused in the wrong places. Projects get delayed, costs spiral out of control, new products flop and despite all optimization attempts, the same problems keep resurfacing. With an outside perspective and my experience from typical development processes, I identify the systemic bottlenecks that are blocking your R&D. The knowledge usually already exists within your company - it's just not systematically accessible, not connected, or being suppressed. With my 3-stage approach, I deliver clarity, control, and sustainable performance improvement for your R&D function. 📍 Stage 1: BOTTLENECK DIAGNOSIS (approx. 4 weeks) ➡️ Rapid clarity: In 1.5 days on-site, I identify the 2–3 real blockages in your development and innovation system—across market, product, organization, technology, and leadership. ➡️ Your benefit: You know exactly where to pull the lever and receive concrete quick wins for immediate relief. 📍 Stage 2: R&D TRANSFORMATION JOURNEY (3-6 months) ➡️ Systematic realignment: From in-depth analysis to strategy development to hands-on implementation support. I don't stay on the consultant sidelines—I work WITH you and your teams. ➡️ Your benefit: A functioning R&D system with shorter cycle times, clear priorities, and measurable results. 📍 Stage 3: INNOVATION EXCELLENCE PROGRAM ➡️ Sustainable empowerment: Over 12 months, we build a world-class innovation system together and develop your leaders—until you can steer independently. ➡️ Your benefit: From "Innovation is the CEO's job" to "We have a system and people who own it"—permanently and independently.
A classic renewal of development. With everything that goes with it. Scope, internal alignment (with marketing, sales, operations and management), type of collaboration, processes, structure, culture - I have modernised everything in a divisional strategy from a single mould. And implemented it, of course. The result: a leading technology assessment and roadmaps, a well-coordinated, synergistic innovation pipeline, new team management structures with more efficient processes. During the Cornoa period, I also managed the implementation of the global restructuring programme (100 employees). In this context, I also managed the turnaround of the largest assembly plant (200 employees). The result: considerable savings, greater flexibility in the supply chain, focussing and adjustments to the footprint and a more competitive product portfolio.
The initial step involved restructuring R&D with a global focus and a moderate transformation to a new basis. The aim was to raise the innovation potential to significantly more innovative products. The introduction of project management ensured operational reliability. The second step was the scaling of the R&D development. With the development and implementation of new strategies for the product areas and, of course, for the development area itself. And the integration of marketing/customer insight studies into the development process. Result: 30 innovative product families developed and brought to market. Based on proprietary technology developments. A well-filled and balanced innovation pipeline. A noticeable leap in the level of innovation. One of my passions at BSN was the technical due diligence for our strategic M&A activities. I analysed many companies in the MedTech sector. And integrated the development/innovation departments of the acquired companies into the BSN system in a tailored way.
For most of my time at Rieter, my team and I developed a new type of underbody protection for cars that combines the advantages of conventional injection moulding and textile systems. We developed a special process and the corresponding system for this. We set this up in a carve-out to qualify the first automotive customers. The result: a basic technology development that makes sustainable new products possible. This product family (Ultra-Silent) is now a mainstay of the product portfolio. I have also refurbished various products, systems and processes ‘in the field’ and have thus experienced the effects of development work with sub-optimal specifications first-hand - sometimes development work is also a long clean-up process.
I came to a crucial realisation in my very first big job, which has helped me a lot in all my positions from then on: A deep understanding of the customer's world is an essential prerequisite for innovation. Coupled with a good technological understanding and the ability to integrate these worlds within the company, outstanding products are created that customers are happy to buy. Insight: Innovation arises across system boundaries.
