About

Jim Della-Giacoma is an advisor on conflict, political economy, and governance in the DC area. He is available for short-term assignments, including travel, that are focused on conflict research, organizational development, political risk, and strategic assessment. He is open to opportunities in Asia and the Pacific that build on his extensive field experience and well-recognized skills as a manager of people and complex situations. Before returning to being an independent consultant, he was at NYU as the Deputy Director at CIC; Jim was a Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University and the Asia Program Director at the International Crisis Group. As ICG's Jakarta-based South East Asia Project Director from 2009-2013, he oversaw the organization’s work in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Timor-Leste. He was an Associate Director at the Conflict Prevention and Peace Forum in New York (2006-2009). As a senior advisor with the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (2003-2006), he worked on citizen participation and elections, including in Afghanistan, Albania, Angola, Bulgaria, Kenya, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iraq, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Sudan, and the West Bank. He was NDI’s Timor-Leste country director (2001-2003). At the United Nations, he was a political affairs officer in the Department of Political Affairs in New York during the 1999 East Timor referendum. He served with the UN Transitional Administration in East Timor, including as its representative to Indonesia (1999-2000). From 1994-1998 he was a correspondent with AFP and Reuters news agencies in Jakarta. He holds a Bachelor of Economics (Political Economy) from the University of Sydney and a Master of Arts (Asian Studies) from the University of New South Wales.
