About

Portfolio Website:www.jiayuchen.design Hi, I’m Jiayu Chen, an Industrial Designer working at the intersection of perception, materials, and future mobility. I’ve always been curious about how things work, often taking them apart and rebuilding them to understand their structure and logic. Today, as technology becomes more autonomous, I focus on designing how people perceive and interact with intelligent systems. I believe clarity, both visual and tactile, is essential to building trust. Through prototyping, testing, and CMF exploration, I translate technical constraints into meaningful user experiences. My work centers on shaping intuitive interactions and creating products that communicate clearly and endure over time.

Translated sustainability research and user insights into CMF vision guidelines for the XC70, EX90, and future concept studies, reinforcing Volvo’s brand identity and informing long-term product strategy around calm, family-oriented mobility. Explored eco-conscious pigments, bio-based coatings, and soft trims, balancing sensory quality, perceived cleanliness, and Volvo’s sustainability commitments while framing material directions as part of a broader brand narrative rather than isolated executions. Analyzed cross-industry color and material trends in consumer electronics, furniture, and fashion, mapping visual and tactile qualities to emotions such as calmness, confidence, and modernity, then synthesizing them into APAC-focused palette frameworks and CMF storylines. Developed moodboards and speculative color narratives grounded in color psychology and trend research, then collaborated with Interior, Exterior, and UX teams to translate them into cabin touchpoints and ambient lighting concepts that evoke a calm, future-oriented experience for Volvo families.
