Social Interactive Robots Researcher at Zora

Shenzhen, Guangdong, China

About

My research interest in the PhD period focused on investigating the behaviours and emotions of robots, involving synthesizing/detecting/recognizing convincing and believable robot facial expressions for potential academic and industrial interest. Then the research direction has been switched to android robots design、multi-channel (e.g., facial expressions, voices, and hand gestures) human-robot interaction、computational model of emotions、robots applied in the Internet of Things (e.g., navigational robots in the supermarkets, drones based on WSN). The main research areas are: Artificial Intelligence, Affective Computing, Robotics, Human Robot Interaction (HRI), Smart Control, Intelligent Systems etc.

Currently working on developing a hardware and software system for an Arduino-based face robot Zora controlled by an Android smart phone. Progress: 1. Use an Open-Source-Hardware Arduino platform to control the robot to generate some facial expressions and mouth movements.(Done) 2. Use an Android cell phone as a control platform to connect to the Arduino platform. By integrating iflytek’s open-source speech recognition&synthesis and face recognition Android App, a cell phone can serve as a human-robot interaction platform, which interacts with the Arduino platform. (Ongoing) 3. Add some sensors to the Arduino platform to augment the interaction between human and the robot. For instance, infrared sensors to detect incoming people; acoustic sound source sensors to detect the direction a person faces allowing the robot to face the person; ultrasonic sensors to detect the distance between human and the robot;and touch sensors can serve as one more channel to interact. 4. Build a Perceptual Control Model in Multi-Channel Interaction Between Human and Social Robots. This emotion model will base on PCT and Roger Moore’s “PRESENT” model, and fuse some concepts drawn from Chinese traditional philosophy “Zhou Yi 周易” . By doing that, a robot equipped with some Chinese characteristics can be expected.

  • Postdoctoral Researcher at The Brain Cognition and Brain Disease Institute for Collaboration Research of SIAT and MIT
    Oct 2014 - Dec 2014 · 3 mos

We are interested in the neural circuits regulating memory, emotions and cognitive functions. We employ in vivo electrophysiology, genetic tools behavioral assays, statistical data analysis and computational methods. The centre is well equipped with multichannel recordings, optogenetics, confocal microscopy and virus-based neuron manipulation. The job requires understanding the brain circuits underlying both normal and diseased conditions.
