  • Volunteer at Blood Center of Wisconsin
    Jan 2010 - Jan 2016 · 6 yrs 1 mo

The Blood Center hosts between 4-6 media drives a year. The media drives are blood drives which receive the media's attention and are hosted at various locations in Wisconsin. Some of the media drives include an outing to the Bradley Center to support the Milwaukee Bucks, Miller Park to support the Milwaukee Brewers, Milwaukee County Zoo to support the Zoological Society, State Fair to support Wisconsin's very own state fair, etc. At the media events there is free childcare for the donors so I am usually watching children and keeping them occupied while the parent is donating blood or platelets. If I am not in the childcare then I am either monitoring the donor flow area or greeting the donors. I encourage everyone to donate blood, plasma or platelets and help save someone's life. If you cannot donate blood, plasma or platelets then give back to the community and volunteer. You never know when yourself, friend or family member may need blood to save his/her life!

  • Math Tutor at Jessica's Tutoring Service
    Jun 2007 - May 2014 · 7 yrs

Once I became a certified teacher in 2007 I began tutoring children in Math during the summers and throughout the school year. I have tutored children from 2nd grade all the way through sophomores in high school. There have been numerous times where I have purchased an item and given the cashier a $5, $10 or $20 bill. The cashier will enter the amount in their system. Then I find some change in my purse and I give it to the cashier and he/she looks at me and says "I already entered the amount in my system". These teens and young adults do not know how to do mental math or add/subtract with pen and paper. It is sad and frightening that there are a good amount of children that do not know their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. If your computer system goes down at work or your calculator breaks you need to know how to solve a problem or give the correct change. I really enjoy working with children and it amazes me how quickly children can catch on to formulas or ideas if you use a hands on approach. I love to make up math games using dominoes, di, memory cards, playing cards, etc.
