I’m currently a final-year Biomedical Science student at Ngee Ann Polytechnic with a strong passion for biology. My academic training has equipped me with both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills essential for scientific research. Through my Final Year Project and Internship at the NUS Department of Medicine, Division of Neurology, I was exposed to translational research on stroke, gaining valuable experience working on projects that bridge scientific discovery with clinical application, further strengthening my aspiration to pursue the clinician-scientist pathway. As a lifelong learner with an inquisitive mind, I actively seek discomfort to broaden my horizons. I believe that stepping into unfamiliarity fosters curiosity, problem-solving, and personal growth. I also view the feedback I receive along the way as a catalyst for continuous self-improvement.
• Principal Investigator (PI): A/Prof Seet Chee Seong Raymond • Project Title: Microbiome characterization in whole blood of patients with ischemic stroke • Conducted blood culture, cell lysis, DNA extraction and purification, blood processing • Refined and optimized the protocol for investigating the microbiome in ischemic stroke patients' blood clots • Mentored new batch of diploma students (Ngee Ann Polytechnic Biomedical Science students), providing hands-on guidance in executing daily experimental procedures and laboratory tasks
Completed a 3‑day observership under the Neurology Department at the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) - Singapore General Hospital (SGH), where I had the privilege of shadowing Dr. Ray Peh and his team of medical officers. During which, I had valuable exposure to clinical workflows and the daily responsibilities of medical doctors, joining the team for ward rounds, exit rounds, outpatient clinics. Beyond clinical diagnosis and management, I gaining deeper appreciation for the multifaceted role of a doctor, observing the importance of patient communication, empathy, and close collaboration with allied health professionals to deliver safe and holistic care. Witnessing how doctors reassured patients and their families, addressing both medical and emotional concerns, was particularly impactful and inspiring. I also had the opportunity to observe the team working together to diagnose a rare neurological case in the Emergency Department, emphasising the importance of teamwork and timely decision-making in clinical practice. In addition, I attended a stroke huddle where post‑treatment management plans were discussed among allied health professionals, as well as a teaching session on lumbar puncture techniques, both of which enriched my learning. Overall, this observership was an eye‑opening experience that provided me with first‑hand exposure to the realities of medicine, reaffirming my aspiration to pursue this path and deepening my appreciation for collaborative, patient‑centred care.
Working in one of Asia's top bar has been a very fulfilling experience where I have learned and honed many skills. These includes teamwork and communication, which are key to working with many others, followed by customer service and interpersonal skills which are crucial when dealing with customers. Throughout my time at the bar, I have also learned to be more flexible when faced with obstacles and to also complete the various tasks I am in charge of in an organized manner to ensure smooth workflow.
