Ghent, Flemish Region, Belgium
I am a Visiting Professor at Ghent University's History Department and Gerda Henkel Fellow. My work focuses on Late Roman political, military and social history, the genesis of barbarian communities in Late Antiquity, and the modern reception of ‘the Fall of Rome’, on which I have published extensively. I am especially interested in the broader history of violence, and processes of state formation and disintegration. Before returning to Ghent, I worked and taught at various universities in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Ireland, and Italy. For my last project, I also worked as a Senior Fellow of the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies, joining the ‘Connecting Late Antiquities’ project. I helped with revising and digitizing the first two volumes of The Prosopography of the Later Roman Empire (AD 260-527), whilst doing research on secular and religious networks in Late Antique North Africa. Besides my scholarly work, I am heavily committed to public outreach and science communication. I have also worked as investigative journalist for independent news site Apache.be and contribute pieces to scientific magazines. I have also provided consultation for people looking to establish a new home and lifestyle in Ireland or Belgium.
